How to Tell if Leather is Genuine
When shopping for leather goods, distinguishing between genuine leather and synthetic alternatives like faux leather can be tricky. Faux leather often imitates the look of real leather but lacks the same texture and durability. Here are a few simple tests to help you tell if leather is genuine:
1. The Moisture Test
Place a drop of water on the leather. If itās genuine, the water will quickly absorb into the material, as leather has natural pores that absorb moisture. Faux leather will typically repel the water and cause it to roll off. However, this test should be done carefullyādonāt saturate the leather, as excess moisture can cause damage.
2. Smell Test
Genuine leather has a distinct, earthy aroma, often compared to wood or natural materials. Synthetic leather, on the other hand, has a chemical or plastic scent. If the item has a strong chemical smell, it's likely faux leather.
3. Care Label
Check the care label inside the product, usually found at the back of the collar or lining. The label should indicate the materials used in the item, including whether itās made of genuine or faux leather. While care labels are helpful, some companies may mislabel their products, so this shouldnāt be your only method of identification.
